Am I Transgender?

Everyone has a right to their own expression of identity.

There are no “rules” of how people express their identity.

Females may feel

  • Stereotypically feminine

  • Physically, more strong and energetic than the stereotype

  • Physically, more androgynous, bulky or hairy than the stereotype

  • Emotionally, more composed and determined than the stereotype

  • Intellectually, more driven or ambitious than the stereotype

  • Intellectually or physically, enjoy interests different to the stereotype

  • Sexually, be interested in relationships with males or females

  • Sexually, feel uncomfortable with puberty, breast development and having other people sexually interested in them

  • Sexually, not interested in relationships

Males may feel

  • Stereotypically masculine

  • Physically, less strong, less macho or effeminate

  • Socially, to have interests in stereotypically female hobbies, female clothing or female expression

  • Sexually, interested in relationships with males or females

  • Sexually, uncomfortable with puberty, genital development, body hair

  • Sexually, not interested in relationships

So Am I Transgender?

6 steps endorsed by health professionals, therapists and counsellors.

You should:

  1. Explore with a gender neutral multidisciplinary health team, including therapists, whether there are other trauma factors at play, such as sexual or physical trauma especially during your childhood or high school development that you may have subconsciously hidden. We often cope with trauma by burying the trauma.

  2. Explore with a gender neutral multidisciplinary health team, whether you have any neurodivergence that impacts how you connect with other people. You may not know that you have neurodivergence.

  3. Your exploration should take several, several sessions. Anyone who diagnosis you after a 30 minutes should raise alarm bells with you.

  4. There are 2 types of health professionals - gender affirming and neutral. A gender affirming professional will confirm that you are transgender without going through Steps 1, 2 and 3 above in detail. A gender neutral professional will listen; they will help you to explore what is making you feel the way you feel, and they have no prejudgement of what you should be.

  5. Read the stories of detransitioners so that you can be well informed and own your own journey.

  6. Do not self diagnose with a “Am I transgender” quizz on Dr Google. (PS. You know that the algorithms create an echo chamber, right? There is only 1 answer to a "Am I transgender" quizz on the internet....).

Having completed steps 1-6 above, you should be better informed to make your own decisions.

You owe it to yourself
not to be
collateral damage
in someone else’s ambition.

Remember,

when you’re hurting,

when you feel you are not connected with others,

or when you feel that your life is a little or a lot fu**ed up,

it is easy to grab the wrong life raft, in the hope of feeling better.
